WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Congressional Progressive Staff Association (CPSA) released the following statement in response to news that the Senate will again refuse to act on climate:

“Tonight’s vote was a landmark moment in the fight for workers’ rights in the United States, and is cause for celebration.

“The membership of the Congressional Progressive Staff Association is outraged and horrified at reports that Senator Manchin is moving to shut down the current round of negotiations for a climate reconciliation bill. With little time remaining on the legislative calendar in an election year, the Senator’s actions are less a stalling tactic than overt obstruction of a broadly supported pillar of President Joe Biden’s platform.

“This latest attempt to stymie a U.S. response to civilization-threatening global warming should come as no surprise, as Senator Manchin has already killed a climate reconciliation bill this Congress. For our membership, many of whom are young people who will bear the brunt of climate change, the fight to pass legislation that averts climate catastrophe cannot end like this. We know all too well that there are policy solutions to climate change — we help write them — but time and again, they are overlooked, slimmed down and traded away. Now, Senator Manchin threatens to dispose of climate policy this Congress entirely.

“We are reaching a boiling point. Over the past few days, countless staffers have reached out to CPSA looking to take action. With over 1,100 Members, CPSA is ready to organize and mobilize around the climate emergency impacting not only us as staffers, but our futures, the futures of every person we serve, and every generation to follow.

Members of CPSA have already called on Democratic Leadership to ensure Senate and House Democrats support President Biden’s climate agenda, and we’re prepared to take action accordingly should they fail to do so. Stay tuned, because there is definitely more to come.”
